April 17 - Bonus content!

Carroll Magnet Middle School Band students now have access to SmartMusic!

You can either use SmartMusic on a computer by going to http://home.smartmusic.com, or you can download the NEW SMARTMUSIC app onto your school iPads (now available in My Services). The app is called New Smartmusic, not Smartmusic.

Follow these directions to set up your free Smart Music account!

You can do lots of cool stuff with this program, like...
1. search for almost any piece of band music you can think of. It will show you the sheet music for your instrument, and you can play along with a full band. Try searching for the music we were going to play for our spring concert, for example.
2. browse for any piece of music, by category, and play along with it.
3. look here for additional special features offered by SmartMusic.

SmartMusic has been around for almost 20 years and it is massive. It does lots, lots, lots of stuff. Go exploring!

April 14-17 (it's Bad Joke Tuesday!)

OUR NEW "REMOTE LEARNING" SCHEDULE. I want to make things as easy as possible for students and their families during this quarantine time. Therefore, I will change how this "song of the day" website works, in order to fit the weekly schedule that students are supposed to be following now. That means I will only post one lesson each week on this page, instead of one each day, and you can do it at your assigned time on your schedule.

SO WE ONLY PRACTICE OUR INSTRUMENT ONCE A WEEK? This is my concern. You cannot learn how to play a musical instrument well if you only play it one time each week. Regardless of what is on the school schedule, I encourage you to play your instrument every day, especially you 8th graders who want to get ready for high school band. I will think of ways to post "bonus content" to this webpage throughout the week, to give you something fresh to play.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS. We are expected to do graded assignments each week, so we will do playing tests. You will record a video of yourself playing the "song of the day", and submit it to me on Google Classroom. I do not have a lot of experience with Google Classroom, so we will be learning together, but that is okay. We will make it work.
To be clear, I do not care about grades; I care about you, and whether or not you can play the music correctly on your instrument. That is to say, the purpose of playing tests is not to give you a grade. The purpose of the playing tests is for me to assess whether or not you have learned what you were supposed to learn, whether or not you are able to do what you are supposed to be able to do with what you learned, and how I can help you. Nothing else matters. Mastery is the only acceptable outcome. Grades are nothing more than documentation of the process we go through together.

April 13

SNARE DRUM: Please watch this instructional video and learn the song below. 8th grade, I know this music is easy for you, but I want you to focus on the strategies for learning new music that I show you in the video (counting, saying "dut", and saying the note values). Master these strategies with easy music, so that you can transfer them to the hard stuff later.

6th GRADE WOODWINDS AND BRASS: Please watch this instructional video and learn the song below. This song will help prepare you for the song that is coming later this week, in which you will start using a new note. It is important that you master the learning strategies I show you in the video (counting, saying the note values, etc.) so please really do these things when I tell you to in the video. Notice that there is also a Background Music recording in the folder below, so you can play along with that once you learn the song.

8th GRADE WOODWINDS AND BRASS: Please watch this instructional video and learn the song below. This week we are going to learn how to read, count, and play melodies with 16th notes. This is important because you will have 16th notes in high school music, so I want to get you ready for them. It is important that you master the learning strategies I show you in the video (counting, saying the note values, etc.) so please really do these things when I tell you to in the video.

7th GRADE WOODWINDS AND BRASS: You may choose to do either the 6th grade or the 8th grade material today. I would prefer you do the 8th grade material. We will probably not play much music with 16th notes next year, but you will have a head start on them. I have some things I want to teach you later this week, but I need to go to the school to get my clarinet first so I can use it in the video.

-------------------------

BONUS: Follow these directions to set up your free Smart Music account! This is for Carroll Magnet Middle School students only. You cannot do this on your school iPad yet because the NEW SMARTMUSIC app is not available in My Services yet, but I am working on that. It will hopefully be available next week. If you have your own iPad, computer, or Chromebook, you can use that.

You can share the Soundtrap project code with each other, and work on the project together at the same time. So then one of you can record part #1, and the other person can record part #2. Snare drum: This is not a song that makes sense with a snare drum part. Today, I would like you to go back to yesterday's song (April 6) and spend some more time with it today. There is a lot to learn from that snare drum part, and I believe it is worth 2 days' attention. Remember that if you have a piano / xylophone at home, you can learn the Mallets part of any Song Of The Day as well.

It's Bad Joke Tuesday.

Jazz pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, a giant in the jazz community and in American culture, passed away this week due to complications from Covid-19. I encourage you to learn more about him and listen to his music. To honor him, I chose one of his recordings for our Song Of The Day. He and his son, Wynton, recorded an entire album using songs from the Peanuts cartoons. Our song of the day is "Linus and Lucy" from that album. You can play along with Marsalis' recording:

Snare Drum: you have a few options today. If you have a drum set, you can go to the Clark Terry video and watch the drummer, and try to play what he is playing. This is a fun jazz swing song and is easy to learn, you will dig it.
If you are unable to do that or you would prefer to play some traditional snare drum stuff today, you have options. You can go back and learn the song from March 30, since my website was down that day and you may have missed it. Or, sixth graders, spend some more time learning the new Fundamentals For 6th Grade Band page for snare drum (remember there is an instructional video to help you).

Video Game Theme Music Bonus! A friend of mine wrote these out for his students, and made them publicly available. Thanks, Dr. Selfridge!

Snare Drum: please check out the new “Fundamentals For 6th Grade Band” for snare drum that I posted yesterday, and give me feedback about it. Do you understand how to play these exercises? Are they helpful? Watch the instructional video linked on the Fundamentals page while you learn how to play it.
